Hmmm. Don’t wear sunglasses?! 10 years ago, aged 62, an optician told me I have the beginnings of cataracts. I asked how I could delay the day I would need something done. She said; ‘Cataracts are caused by UV light - wear sunglasses that cut out 100% of UV light whenever you are outside.’ 3 further opticians and consultant Ophthalmologists on RUclips say the same thing - wear sunglasses when you are outside. But this podcast says don’t wear them. Maybe cataracts are more prevalent because people are living longer - and not wearing sunglasses. After 10 years, my ‘beginnings of cataracts’ are no worse. I’ll carry on with the sunglasses.

Darin, I have a request of you: would you consider referring to processed foods as "edible products"? This might tweak people's awareness towards realizing that processed edibles are not really food. I'm a solution-oriented person and I'll probably be preaching to the choir here. There are definitely issues around communicating climate change issues to the general public. There are also issues within mainstream and social media with disinformation and misinformation, not to mention a lack of understanding among journalists and lax journalistic ethics. In terms of legislation, there needs to be a separation between corporate and state. Absolutely companies need to be held accountable for the damage they cause to both the environment, animals, and humans! They also need to be accountable for transparency in their R&D, and educating the public about their products. Joe Public cannot be expected to perform research and understand the data and science behind products. Most of us are busy trying to move from surviving to thriving.

OCFA C:15 is NOT an Essential Fatty Acid. The human body makes C:15 in the liver from the Short Chain Fatty Acid (SCFA) Propionate. Propionate is made in the gut from microbial fermentation of dietary fiber. The higher the fiber intake, the more C:15 is produced. The reason we see higher amounts of C:15 in diary products, is because dairy is made by an animal (cow) that consumes high amounts of fiber (grass). Pathway: Fiber > Microbiome conversion to Propionate > Liver conversion to C:15 2017 Study: Odd-chain fatty acids as a biomarker for dietary fiber intake: a novel pathway for endogenous production from propionate. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Link: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28424190/ "Conclusions: Our data show that gut-derived propionate is used for the hepatic (liver) synthesis of OCFAs in humans. The association of OCFAs with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes may therefore also relate to dietary fiber intake and not only dairy fat."

Do not take shisandra with recreational drugs. It basically supercharges your kidneys. When you take recreational drugs, your kidneys will work to remove the drugs from your system. Because of the schisandra's supercharging effects on the kidneys (super-healthy), your kidneys will rapidly suck out the water and electrolytes, and you might end up pissing youselves to death. When experimenting with medicinal adaptogens, herbs, and supplements, ensure you are dosing appropriately, and that you are conscious of interactions, and metabolics associated with consumption of other substances. (Alcahol, nicotine, recreational, and prescription narcotics). I took 2 grams of Schisandra the other day. Was puffing my vape, and had a few drinks with friends (Hot summer day in the UK), I ended up severely dehydrated, with heart palpitations and weakness associated with dehydration and electrolyte loss. My bloodwork showed perfectly healthy kidneys and liver. It made me pee away all the good stuff wth the bad. (Kidneys became super spunges/hoses, in response to recreational consumption) My kidneys were 'too' healthy. This state then comes with more dire risks: If you know you're dehydrated, you might want to drink water, But then you've already pissed out your electrolytes, so you can quickly go from moderate to severe dehydration, to water-toxicity. Both potentially fatal. So try to ensure you stay away from recreationals as much as possible when using Shisandra, and, if you are in an environment where you might partake recreationally, ensure you have electrolyte tablets and a bottle of water, so you can maintain your hydration, and electrolyte levels. A cautionary tale.

Whether talking about our own diet or our pets, there is so much "expert" opinion that researching the best diet quickly becomes depressingly confusing. Bizarre and so bizarre that initially I thought here we go with the internet crazies! Dolphins working for the us navy? Really? I have always wondered why we used to be so metabolically healthy in the 70s with the frankly awful diet. ( I’m British. I’m talking fried eggs, lots of full cream milk, frying stuff in lard, frying and eating lots of bacon, plenty of butter, red meat. Sure there were vegetables and fruit but by current dietary advice the diet was killer. And sure heart disease and cancer were lethal. But most likely that was due to everyone smoking, drinking and lack of dedicated exercise? Possibly (nobody except boxers or serious athletes used gyms in the 70s). Metabolically people were healthy(thin as rakes, no type 2 diabetes, no non alcoholic fatty liver disease, very little obesity and perhaps the root cause is that we are starving ourselves of certain fatty acids? Amazing who would have thought? I’m upping my Greek yoghurt, butter and full cream milk pronto.
